Jessica Lee suffered from nightmares and daytime premonitions of violent death. She approached Samson, the fat detective, and asked him, in the event of her sudden death, to investigate the circumstances and bring her murderer to justice. Samson had never been asked to act in this capacity before and grudgingly agrees to take a watching brief. But it is something other than death which causes him to act and to embark on a strange and dangerous undertaking in which an exclusive perfume plays a crucial part.
