The man known as Jem McNair is two steps ahead of the hangman. Condemned as a traitor to King Henry VII and sentenced to death, he hides in the teeming warrens of London, the only place in England where he stands a chance of not being noticed.

But cruel fate has other plans for him. After disastrous spring floods, the body of a good friend is found one morning upon a pile of debris at the foot of London Bridge. He’s been stabbed in the neck.

The discovery forces a choice — keep his head down and do nothing, or try and find the killer, a path which threatens to expose his true identity with fatal consequences.

Yet duty bound, he embarks on an investigation that carries him deep into the medieval London underworld and the vibrant and violent waterfront, where fortunes are made and lives are cheap.
