A different kind of gamelit novel -- a classic noir detective enters a virtual game world!

Can street smarts become game skills?

Tough guy private eye Derrick has long survived by relying on his fists, his gun, and his street smarts. Derrick's fallen on hard times, so what seems like a simple assignment -- the retrieval of a sacred relic stolen from a church -- represents an opportunity for him to get not only some coin but also perhaps some spiritual currency.

But the trail soon leads Derrick into an all but forgotten virtual reality realm, a twisted dark carnival world peopled with desperate players and strange beings: the Funland Kill Zone. And the relic is no simple relic but actually an Artifact so powerful that it could be used to fuel an eruption of undead evil into the real world.

Trapped in the Funland, in order to not only complete his quest but simply survive Derrick has to figure out the rules of the deadly amusement park where the games are rigged, few things are as they seem, voluptuous beauty can be treacherous, and increasingly dangerous creatures lurk in the shadows around the corners of each tent.

However, not everyone in the Kill Zone is an enemy -- loner Derrick reluctantly accepts the help of a crew of remarkable characters including a beguiling lady elf, a clockwork parrot and a sideshow freak. With their help, some trial and error, and sheer determination, Derrick may just be able to beat the odds and survive long enough to fight off a legion of weirdness, cross the dangerous landscape of the Funland, climb the Tower of Lunacy, and have a final confrontation with the mysterious Dr. Tenebrous.

And save the world. Or, perhaps, several.

From the Author:

I've written dozens of books in several different genres, including gamelit novelizations in the God of War game universe. When I learned about the emerging genre of litrpg I was immediately grabbed by the exciting wide-open possibilities of interesting new stories to explore, involving new worlds to build, extraordinary new combinations to try.

I've always liked noir fiction, and I wondered: could the world-weary tough private eyes of Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy and Patrica Highsmith survive in a digital world? Would street smarts translate into game skills? Could they "level up" in time to win the day? And as soon as I asked that question Derrick showed up so I could tell his story.

This is Derrick's first adventure as a Virtual Reality Private Investigator. But while building Derrick's world I glimpsed that there are many other virtual reality realms like the Funland out there, strange neglected pockets of weirdness each with a unique mystery. More cases for Derrick, more places to visit.
