1915 trickles to an end, trench war establishing itself and the warring countries belatedly turning their industries to the needs of modern conflict. The factories are producing stockpiles of weapons and ammunition and the armies are slowly being equipped with the modern weapons they need.

The French and British are slowly coming to realise that Russia is a liability. Initially, they had expected that Russia would be able to use its massive numbers to steamroller Germany. They now fear they must protect Russia from German invasion. If Germany is able to take the wheatfields of the Steppes then the blockade will be valueless and the war will be unwinnable.

The stalemate on the Western front must be broken. There must be a Big Push.

The soldiers fighting the war know that plans for the Big Push must fail. The Generals planning the war are distant from the trenches and know better; they will not listen to anything that contradicts their own clever imaginations.

The politicians in London and Paris have lost control of their military. They do not know what is happening and are too weak to give meaningful orders.

The stage is being set for disaster.
