It's 1915. A brutal war rages in Europe.

In Indiana, Dr. Evie Jones is cruelly jilted by her pilot lover. Devastated, she joins her best friend Nurse Bonnie Talbot on a ship sailing for France where her surgery skills are needed and wanted. There they join the Khaki Girls, upper-class British women who have opened a hospital in an ancient Abbey near the fighting. Evie longs to practice the surgery she's been denied at home and immediately gets her chance. One of her first patients is a British pilot, Captain Edward Arbington, son and heir of an Earl , whose hasty front line surgery has left him bleeding internally. Her criticism of his surgeon gets her in very hot water.

As the two friends save lives, their own lives change in dangerous ways they could never have imagined, taking them to the battlefield, to Edward's Buckston Hall in England and to risking their lives in snowbound Switzerland before victory bells ring out.

Yet, Evie's war is not over. She has unfinished business at Lord Arbington's Buckston Hall.
