Oregon Trail, Nebraska Territory - July, 1858
Wagon trains, one after another, for the past sixteen years have beaten ruts into the prairie beside the North Platte, scarring the land and driving the buffalo away from the Cheyennes’ ancestral hunting ground. Chief Gray Eagle has vowed to stop them and sends his Dog Soldiers to attack.
Captain Irving Wheeler is leading a patrol of the 2nd Cavalry to locate the Cheyenne before they can attack the next wagon train. Scout Caleb Miller finds the Cheyenne but not before they attack. Wagons burn and lives have been lost when Caleb, Captain Wheeler, and Sergeant Anders arrive. When Caleb and the captain learn twin teenage girls were taken, duty becomes personal. Caleb and Wheeler set off alonetwo soldiers against the Cheyenne Nation.
Red Moon, the powerful Medicine Man, The Keeper of the Sacred Arrows, has taken the girls. Will Caleb and the captain defy the odds and bring the girls back? Or, like so many before, will their bones bleach under the prairie sun? Will the girls be saved or lost forever?
