Escape Through the Iron Gates
(2027)(The eighth book in the When Heroes Flew series)
A novel by H W 'Buzz' Bernard
To escape Nazi-occupied Europe, Captain Lars Moen must do the unthinkable: head straight toward Berlin.
Shot down during the legendary low-level raid on the Ploesti oil refineries, the B-24 pilot has one reason to survive: an infant daughter in Oregon who has already lost her mother. No prison camp in the Transylvanian Alps will keep him from her.
Aided by Romanian Princess Ecaterina Caradja and Rodica Lăzărescu, a farm girl whose command of languages may be their only hope of crossing occupied Europe, Lars breaks out and attempts the unthinkable. He follows the frozen Danube through the Iron Gates, then through Hungary and Austria toward Berlin itself.
Behind them comes an SS officer known as the Bucharest Butcher, a soft-spoken killer who has never lost a manhunt. Lars has a continent to cross. The Butcher only has to catch him once.
Perfect for readers of Mark Sullivan's Beneath a Scarlet Sky and Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale, retired Air Force colonel and award-winning author H.W. "Buzz" Bernard delivers a gripping WWII historical thriller inspired by real events—a story of courage, sacrifice, and a relentless pursuit in which the shortest road home leads through the lion's den.
