Gold's Strike

(2025)
(The sixth book in the Marshal Micah Gold Western series)
A Story by

A marshal had a job to do, but some in the town chose to retire him before he had completed the work.

Marshal Micah Gold knew where his fellow marshal had been, but only precious little about the work he'd been doing. So, when the wire came from the recovering lawman telling him to go to Darby and find Kimbrough, the cryptic message told him nothing of what he was to expect, nor what role the man he was to find played in all of it. But a marshal had been attacked, and no one gets to do that without paying for it. With little idea of what he would find upon arriving, Gold, along with a helpful sheriff, ride to the town of Darby.

Wealth had been discovered just outside of Darby. Though that in itself usually meant a time of prosperity for all because of the work it would generate, and the cash that would soon trickle into every hand in town, but this time gaining wealth would come at a cost. A man named Atwood had made a dozen fortunes in his lifetime coaxing the color from the ground, and in doing so he had learned a few things. One of those was that for a large mining operation to run properly, the men who worked it had to have their wants and needs met, and that meant that the town of Darby was going to need to change, and the small army of enforcers Atwood had posted in town would ensure it.

It will fall to Marshal Gold to set things right again. The money was there for Atwood to make, of that there was no question, but it could not be made at the expense of a town's people and their way of living. The question that remained was, how far will Atwood go to hold onto what he believed was his to do with as he pleased, and how far will Marshal Gold go to stop him.
