The town saw the potential to be a cattle shipping terminal to the packing houses in St. Louis, which would bring great prosperity to the town. The trouble began a month before when Whitesboro’s marshal was killed in a saloon brawl. The town council had been lax in hiring a new marshal, but now needed one quickly. Seth Willis answered the call for the marshal’s position, bringing with him years of lawman experience. Everyone in town, including the town council, took to Willis’ personable demeanor and dedication to duty, turning the town over to him lock, stock, and barrel.
Everyone that is, except Eli Odell, the reclusive blacksmith living on the old side of town. He knew a setup game when he saw one. He wired a cryptic message to his old friend Lt. Joseph Allen at Ranger Station Forth Worth: ‘See me in Whitesboro, and stay secret.’ Allen, Marlow, and Dixon rode into Whitesboro undercover. Eli was right, there was a setup, but it would take all the experience they possessed to unravel the intricate plot, learn who all the players were, and survive an ambush before they could build and spring the trap on the clever thieves.
