Donald Montague, a young archaeologist, comes home from a North African digging site, bringing with him an old friend whom he had not seen for some years, to stay with the family for a few days. However, within a fortnight, Montague's friend is brutally murdered while working in the garden. Inspector McLean, who takes over the investigation, finds himself confronted with the most baffling problems, and frustrated at every turn, until it looks as if the mystery will never be solved.
