Things are not going well for Ishbel and Ewan. Ishbel is miserable living in the countryside, Ewan hates how much time she spends with the local physician and they have a new murder to solve.

Ishbel was looking forward to returning to Edinburgh soon, but now that plan has had to be changed. She is bored and frustrated living on the country estate where Ewan grew up, while he has plenty to do and spends little time at home. She only has two real friends nearby – James Fraser, a physician, and Emma Lee, a spinster.

It is James who tells them of Lady Ashton’s death and of his professional belief that she was smothered with a pillow. Both Lady Ashton’s husband and cousin had reasons to kill her, but unfortunately it seems impossible for them to have done so.

James takes an interest in their hunt for the killer, Ewan growing less civil every time he finds him at the house, and then Emma falls under suspicion for the crime. Tensions rise between Ishbel and Ewan to the point where their marriage is threatened and a final twist might have even more devastating consequences for them.

If you enjoy historical mysteries with clever plots and complex characters you will love this series that is set in Georgian-era Scotland.
