Elaine hadn't wanted to go back to France, where less than a year ago her marriage had crashed so disastrously; she didn't want to be continually in the company of her husband Yvan; least of all did she want to see Solange Bourget, the girl Yvan had balatantly preferred to her. But her uncle Armanc was ill, probably dying, and she couldn't be so heartless as to refuse to go back and see him, so reaslly she had no choice. But then Elaine found herself, for diplomatic reasons, having to pretend to the family that she and Yvan had become reconciled - which was dangerous, for she realised that she still loved him as much as ever...
