‘Lewis is a master craftsman.’ Literary Review
A suspenseful thriller set in the remote hills and valleys of Northumberland.
Retired schools inspector Robert Fanshaw is brought back part-time for one last assignment: the inspection of a residential school for troubled boys in the Northumberland hills.
He’s barely there a day when the deputy headmaster vanishes without a trace.
The locals can’t hide their dislike of the school and the staff are tearing each other apart. When a bloodied knife is found in the long grass at the edge of the playing field, every eye in the school turns to one watchful, dangerously quiet boy.
Then the missing man is found floating in a forest pool, his neck broken.
This is no routine inspection. Fanshaw is now drawn into the hunt for a killer. As the locals’ dark secrets come to light, he begins to suspect that someone in these lonely hills is willing to kill again to keep the horrific truth hidden.
An atmospheric and gripping British crime mystery set deep in the Northumberland wilds, perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves, LJ Ross, Peter Robinson and Reginald Hill.
