Alan Monaghan was born in Dublin. After leaving school he served an apprenticeship at the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.

Alan started writing at an early age. In 1995 he was shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing award for the short story Rosary. In 2003 he was once again shortlisted for the Hennessy New Irish Writing Award for The Soldiers Song, which went on to win both the Emerging Fiction Prize and the overall New Irish Writing Award.
