When murder comes to the Kentish village of Cuckoo Leas, the elderly Parson Caleb Pennywick is forced to turn sleuth. In 1780s England villages protect their own secrets and Parson Pennywick sets out to unmask the villains with as little need of outside investigation as possible. Even the gentle parson could hardly have expected murder to take place at the Squire's celebration of his daughter's betrothal, however, or at the usually joyous feast of the Harvest Supper; nor, when Parson Pennywick visits the spa of nearby Tunbridge Wells at the height of the social season could he have imagined that instead of improving his health by taking the waters at the Walks, he would be asked to investigate the murder of a young girl.
