Periscope and Propeller

(1918)
A novel by

Commander James Carew, Royal Navy, has recently been promoted but yearns to be back in command of his beloved submarine M.39.

Never fearful in the face of the enemy, he is as brave as he is charming and sails his 'old tin pot' submarine with his second in command; the delightfully devious, fiery and full of jest Petty Officer Michael Mulvaney.

Together with a crew of twenty they are a loyal family on board and run their operation like clockwork.

Such is the success of the crew that word spreads throughout Europe and beyond of their escapades and a handsome reward is to be had in the event of capturing the M.39.

Wickedly dodging orders Carew determinedly accepts a challenge to a dual, with the full force of his blood thirsty men behind him.

Often resorting to concentrated periods of hope and prayers when their supplies are exhausted, the men fight tirelessly to maintain the reputation of top dog on the waters.

Adopting a daring and witty stance they invite scraps and profanity but the military skill of this crew is not to be under estimated.

One particular challenge before a long overdue rest awaits them, having been warned that they are venturing into unchartered territory of new and unmatched naval engineering, can the crew reign successful far away from home to return once again?

'Periscope and Propeller' is a highly entertaining and vivid volume of tales, dealing with the daredevil exploits of a patrol boat in restless submarine war. It paints the ebbs and flows of the Navy Trade, the comradeship, expert skill and instability of a life at sea.
