Abducted Souls and Other Difficult Stories

(2020)
A collection of stories by

The “difficult” in the above title has multiple meanings. Some of these works had trouble finding that willing editor, while others, managing to be published easily enough, nonetheless ignited disapproval if not out-and-out fury. Brutal violence waits inside some of these stories, sexual themes in others, while the worst offenders dwell in the most dangerous realm: Religious conversion. Add to that an abundance of unlikable characters, and the difficult label is entirely appropriate.

Now I’ve given you this clear warning. My obligations have been met.

But as an added note: The nature of our world today -- it seems to me -- is that educated people like to consider themselves enlightened and tolerant. Yet many of us, finding ourselves in the presence of God, bloodlust and intercourse, choose to grow faint and look away.

Thank goodness this attitude will never be a weakness. Thank goodness that nothing in this world will ever be difficult again.
