In the spring of 1825, the Scottish explorer Captain Alexander Laing arrived in Tripoli, aiming to explore the lower reaches of Niger. But as he was rowed into the harbour, he could not have known the intrigues that awaited him in the Bashaw's Place and the hot, dangerous deserts.
