Bats Outta Hell
(2026)(The fourth book in the Jerry Snyder series)
A novel by Stewart Matthews and Wayne Stinnett
After a year spent building their new boat, ‘Pathfinder,’ then another nine months sailing her across two oceans and around the southern tip of Africa, Jerry and Alicia Snyder are just one overnight sail from arriving home in St. Thomas, when Alicia spots a fishing boat adrift off Montserrat in the Leeward Islands.
A man’s lifeless body is slumped over the gunwale, and a long smear of blood can be seen running down the hull to the waterline. Jerry is a former Air Force Pararescueman and homicide detective and Alicia is a nurse, so they are both compelled to render aide if possible. When they board the drifting boat, they find a single, surgically clean knife wound in the dead man's neck and below deck, they find a scrawny boy frozen in catatonic shock, with a bloody kitchen knife locked in his fist. Before Jerry can make sense of either, a boatload of armed men comes screaming over the horizon.
The nearest port is Montserrat, a half-abandoned island in the shadow of a smoldering volcano. The victim's body disappears from the crime scene, and the boy wakes up with a foul mouth and a blade at Alicia's throat. He wants one thing: to find his missing sister. His only lead points into the jungle of the Silver Hills where a sadist called Goldtooth rules supreme, collecting his victims' teeth.
In the caves beneath an old banana plantation something is being brewed that glows lavender in the dark. The street calls it Purple D. Goldtooth calls it money.
The earthquakes are coming faster, and the whole island seems ready to tear itself apart. Jerry has to work through an unstable geology, drug runners, crooked cops, and a buried history of stolen children before the killer, and the mountain, bury them all.
But the hardest question may be closer to home. Jerry grew up on his father's blood money. What does he owe to a lost boy who has never been shown another way to live?
Genre: Mystery
