James grew up in Swan Hill in Victoria, Australia. In 1938, he moved to London where he established a career in journalism, working for major international news publications. The Organisation of International Journalists awarded him the gold medal for journalism in 1972.

James Adridge wrote about thirty novels for adults and children, short stories, plays, non-fiction, television scripts and journalism. His writing has been published in forty languages.
