And at last to a Genoese fortress on the Black Sea, where the Golden Horde is dying of something in its own camp and has begun catapulting its dead over the ramparts.
Whatever is rotting in those corpses boards the galleys home with the wool and the silk.
Tom will fight at Crecy beneath the young Black Prince. He will come back rich to an England half emptied of the living, its villages silent, its harvests rotting for want of hands. And he will watch the lords who survived move to force the rest back into chains.
They should never have taught the peasants to fight in France . . .
