The core of this War World Concordance was assembled over a period of eight years, beginning in 1987, when Jim Baen asked Jerry Pournelle and myself to create a shared-world universe taking place in Jerry’s CoDominium/Empire of Man Future History for Baen Books. After creating the planet Haven (aka War World) and working out a rough background, Jerry and I asked a number of other writers to write stories for the first War World anthology. There were a number of requests for a comprehensive concordance to explain all the oddities and peculiarities of the Byers System, Haven’s astronomy, geography, day/night cycle, seasons, geology, biology, history, flora and fauna, inhabitants, etc.
This Concordance is the result.
The lion’s share of the physical description and analysis of the Byers System, Cat’s Eye, and Haven were produced by Stephen Shervais. We owe him a great debt of thanks. Recently, Doug McElwain has become one of our top War World authorities, as well as author, and has been a great help in expanding the scope of War World.
Special thanks go to Jerry Pournelle for allowing me to continue and add to his wonderful creation, the CoDominium and Empire of Man Future History.
Other important contributors are Don Hawthorne, for his marvelous work on the Saurons, E.R. Stewart, who single-handedly brought the Church of New Universal Harmony to life, and Harry Turtledove and S.M. Stirling for their creation of the Ha-Bandari; all of whom have come to live in readers’ imaginations through the word. Finally, Evan Ladouceur, one of our distinguished continuity editors, who has been a great help in keeping the background true to Jerry’s vision.
Portions of this Concordance were provided by Jerry Pournelle, Stephen Shervais, Doug McElwain, Larry King, Poul Anderson, Don Hawthorne, John Dalmas, E.R. Stewart, William F. Wu, Larry Niven, S.M. Stirling, Chuck Gannon, Harry Turtledove, John F. Carr, Susan Shwartz, Roland Green, Al Brown, Mark Moeser and many others. More recently, Doug McElwain has added some fascinating and crucial material on the Alderson Drive and the Langston Field.
For the War World chronology and continuity, we thank Larry King, whose help has been invaluable. His website: Science Fiction Timeline Site: Jerry Pournelle’s Future History (At:
http://www.chronology.org/pournelle/) is the best CoDominium/Empire of Man database on the Internet.
In addition, the Wikipedia entries on the CoDominium and Empire of Man were very useful sources for information on the background of future histories. As were, of course, Jerry Pournelle’s own works, especially
The Prince (with S.M. Stirling) and The Mote in God’s Eye(with Larry Niven).
