Katie Hale recommends
The Modern Fairies (2024)
Clare Pollard
"The Modern Fairies gives us intimate access to the most prestigious of private Parisian salons. In a novel both aching and cruel, sumptuous and tender, Pollard's beautiful writing leads us along winding pathways. Through its prickling branches to exquisite clearings of hope, this book consumed me."
Idol, Burning (2022)
Rin Usami
"A vivid depiction of the joys and despairs of teenage fan culture, Idol, Burning is urgent and all-consuming . . . In this passionate and compassionate novel, the voice of teenage desperation sings out."
Orpheus Builds a Girl (2022)
Heather Parry
"A tale of anguished and obsessive love, with a darker version of the truth scattered through it like shrapnel. In her unsettling debut, Heather Parry explores what it means to love and to live - which of our stories linger after death, and which remain impossible to hold. Sumptuously written and impossible to step away from, Orpheus Builds a Girl is a haunting melody of a book, which keeps playing long after the final page."
