William Ritter began writing the Jackaby series in the middle of the night when his son was still an infant. After getting up to care for him, Will would lie awake, his mind creating rich worlds and fantasies--such as the one in New Fiddleham. Will lives and teaches in Springfield, Oregon.

William Ritter recommends

The Forgotten Lore (2026)
(Ellen Poe, book 1)
Diana Peterfreund
"Balancing the cozy and the creepy, Ellen Poe is a delightfully dark salute to the fascinating figure of Edgar Allan Poe. The characters are instantly engaging, and Peterfreund has clearly done her research. More than just referencing Poe's greatest hits, the story delves into his messy life, explores the echoes of his death, and draws on his passion for cryptic puzzles to craft a Poe-themed escape room of an adventure for our young protagonist. All around, a satisfying supernatural mystery to make Poe proud."

Berserker (2017)
(Berserker , book 1)
Emmy Laybourne
"Berserker embraces the beautiful brutality of both Viking lore and Frontier tales, and it does so without resorting to tired tropes or toxic masculinity. This is a brilliantly unexpected fusion of cowboys and old gods - intense and gritty and yet surprisingly tender - but the real strength of Emmy Laybourne's writing is that, for all their superhuman abilities, her characters are so very human."
