Kamilah Cole recommends

The Tarot Trials (2026)
(Tarot Trials, book 1)
Katee Robert
"Wildly inventive and brimming with distinctive character voice, The Tarot Trials is not to be missed . . . This magnificent, ambitious story delivers everything I love in a fantasy adventure and so much more."

Divine Oaths (2026)
Elizabeth Agyemang
"Thoughtful and incisive, romantic and bold, Divine Oaths is the best kind of dark academia - the kind that makes you think about truth, power, and who controls them both. Elizabeth Agyemang has delivered a modern classic in this page-turning debut, and I can't wait to see what she writes next."

The Dark in Her Veins (2026)
(Divine Villains, book 1)
M K Lobb
"A sinfully steamy tale of two people who match each other's freak to a degree that is dangerous to the public, The Dark in Her Veins is for the girlies who like their romance, their magic systems, and their main characters just a little messed up. I loved this hypnotic adult debut, but then, if it's written by M.K. Lobb, I'm not only eager to be destroyed but ready to thank her for the honor."

When Dealing with Dragons (2026)
Dana Swift
"If you're a fan of dragons, you need to pick up this new fantasy by Dana Swift... light and funny, whip-smart and immersive story perfect for fans of found family and making this broken world a better place, one small action at a time."

The Way It Haunted Him (2026)
Laura R Samotin
"I'm the one haunted by this tender and gorgeous story. Laura R. Samotin tackles themes of atonement and duty - and how those things can be wielded as a form of abuse - in the nuanced way that her readers have come to expect, while expertly weaving in Jewish mysticism and casual queerness. Fans of dark fantasy, shining hope, and everlasting love, don't miss out on this one."

The Faraway Inn (2026)
Sarah Beth Durst
"A heartwarming cozy fantasy like only Sarah Beth Durst can write. Brew some tea and settle in."

The Book of Blood and Roses (2026)
(Callisto Chronicles, book 1)
Annie Summerlee
"A thrilling and addictive adventure, this debut tackles all my favorite vampire tropes and makes them new again by centering a steamy and heartwarming lesbian love story. Fans - and haters - of vampire books will find something to love in this stunning tale."

I'll Make a Spectacle of You (2025)
Beatrice Winifred Iker
"Steeped in Southern folklore and religious traditions, this gothic debut examines the cost of protection, the strength of belief, and the bloody truth that hides in the past of even the safest of havens. Beatrice Winifred Iker is a phenomenal new voice in horror."

A Fate Unwoven (2025)
(Threads of Fate , book 1)
Rachael A Edwards
"An ambitious story about destiny, trust, lies, and devotion, A Fate Unwoven is a fast-paced debut that reminds us all that, in a harsh world, the most dangerous - and the most powerful - thing one can do is care."

The Maiden and Her Monster (2025)
Maddie Martinez
"An exquisite debut about an eldest daughter and how far she would go to protect her family. Malka's journey toward finding confidence in herself and falling in love with a certain surly golem is as legendary as the myths peppered throughout the story. This book is an instant classic."

Of Flame and Fury (2025)
Mikayla Bridge
"An exceptional debut... this book is anchored by found family and a glowing rivals-to-lovers romance. You need this one on your shelf!"

Fateless (2025)
(Fateless Trilogy , book 1)
Julie Kagawa
"A page-turning thrill ride with an unforgettable heroine, Fateless deftly weaves everything I love about the fantasy genre into the tapestry of its pages. This gripping read will have you begging for the sequel!"

That Devil, Ambition (2025)
Linsey Miller
"A brutal and breathtaking dark academia novel that explores the price of education and the sacrifices that are made to attain it, That Devil, Ambition was a heart-pounding read from start to poignant finish. Linsey Miller never misses."

Boys with Sharp Teeth (2025)
Jenni Howell
"In this beautifully crafted, twisted love story, Howell explores what happens when love doesn't make you better, but in fact makes you worse. These complicated characters have tangled relationships and thorny secrets that make for a truly stunning tale."

What Wakes the Bells (2025)
Elle Tesch
"An utterly fresh tale you'll want to read over and over again, What Wakes the Bells stuns from the first page to the last, reverberating through your heart like a vesper bell--without the doom, of course. Mina is the demisexual heroine of my dreams, whose love--for her family and friends, for her duty and her heart--creates its own powerful, world-shaking magic."

Where Shadows Bloom (2025)
Catherine Bakewell
"Gorgeous, lyrical, and incredibly emotional, Where Shadows Bloom is a story about love in all its forms - when it's false, when it's real, when it hurts, and when it heals. I cannot recommend this dark daydream of a novel highly enough."

The Queen's Spade (2025)
(Queen's Spade, book 1)
Sarah Raughley
"A thoughtful, powerful, unputdownable adventure!"

The Ancient's Game (2024)
Loni Crittenden
"The Ancient's Game is a gorgeously written adventure about one girl's determination to carve her place in the world and protect her family - and the love she finds along the way. Kellan's fractured world is fresh and unforgettable, and her gang of humans and automatons are poised to be your new favorite found family."

Immortal Dark (2024)
(Immortal Dark Trilogy, book 1)
Tigest Girma
"A ferocious debut from an innovative new voice, Immortal Dark doesn't shy away from the darkness of its world or the darkness inside us all. Thanks to its detailed worldbuilding, vicious heroine, and suspenseful twists, you'll support women's wrongs from bloody start to finish."

Foul Days (2024)
(Witch's Compendium of Monsters, book 1)
Genoveva Dimova
"Foul Days is a phenomenal blend of danger and delight from an exciting new voice in fantasy. The characters, the world, the magic, and the monsters are all compelling, but the deft way in which Dimova brings them all to life while weaving in heavier themes of classism and abuse will leave you breathlessly awaiting the sequel long before you reach that final page."
