The Barnes & Noble Review
David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer's eighth annual Year's Best collection, which includes the very best short stories of 2002 by the masters of the genre, should be at the top of everyone's list of perfect escape reading. Included in this year's anthology are the usual suspects -- Bruce Sterling, Jack Williamson, Paul Di Filippo, Gene Wolfe, Nancy Kress, and Ursula Le Guin. Also included is one of the last works by the late, great Charles Sheffield -- a brilliantly witty tale about jewel smuggling entitled "The Diamond Drill."

Other noteworthy stories include "Patent Infringement" by Nancy Kress, a sardonic story about a man's lawsuit told entirely in memos and letters; "At Dorado" by Geoffrey A Landis, a love story of sorts that takes place on a remote black-hole transit station; and Richard Chwedyk's "A Few Kind Words for A E van Vogt", a touching poem about Van Vogt's SFWA Grand Master Award acceptance after the legendary author had succumbed to Alzheimer's.

Hartwell and Cramer's newest Year's Best collection is summertime entertainment -- 23 absolutely dazzling science fiction gems! Paul Goat Allen
