Jonathan Ames recommends
Snowball's Chance (2002)
"While reading SNOWBALL'S CHANCE, one plays this terrifying guessing game of animal clef: Which animal am I? Which animal is my neighbour? Which animal is my enemy? Written in lucid, wise, funny, fable-prose, this book brings to mind Spiegelman's Maus--the use of a playful metaphor to reveal horrible, frightening truths we might otherwise refuse to see. A scary, engrossing novel, a sustained triumph."
Our Lives Are the Rivers (2007)
"Page turner, work of art, love story, historical novel - Jaime Manrique has done it all in this magnificent and stunning book."
Bad Monkeys (2007)
"A science fiction Catcher in the Rye... Highly entertaining. It moves fast and keeps surprising you."
Buffalo Lockjaw (2009)
"In Buffalo Lockjaw, love of one's parents and love of one's hometown mix powerfully with the mad undertow of loss that seems as inevitable in life as gravity."
Alice Fantastic (2009)
"Maggie Estep is the bastard daughter of Raymond Chandler and Anais Nin. Her prose is hard-boiled and sexy; she turns a good phrase and shows some leg."
