William Boyle recommends
Heaven's Crooked Finger (2017)
(Earl Marcus Mystery, book 1)
Hank Early
"Hank Early's Heaven's Crooked Finger grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go. Evocative place writing, memorable-as-hell characters, sentences that hum, great pacing, and a strutting brutality. Early's a writer of great power. This is one that will stick with me, and I'm already looking forward to whatever's next."
Dry County (2019)
Jake Hinkson
"A masterpiece of economy and tension. An instant noir classic."
Lady Chevy (2020)
John Woods
"Reading Lady Chevy by John Woods reminds me of my first encounters with the work of William Gay, Larry Brown, and Donald Ray Pollock. It's poetic and visceral, full of characters I won't soon forget, the place deeply alive on the page. It's a book of great emotional power, a book that's built to last. Searing, humane, and truly haunting."
The Ancient Hours (2020)
Michael Bible
"Michael Bible has the golden hand of Carson McCullers and the joyous cosmic heart of Richard Brautigan."
Above the Rain (2021)
Víctor del Árbol
"Víctor del Árbol's Above the Rain is a heartrending tour de force about mortality and chance and learning to live with ghosts. Rich with noir atmosphere, the book begins in 1950s Morocco and then brings us to contemporary Spain and Sweden. A sprawling ensemble cast drives the narrative, making for an epic unknotting of voices and experiences. It's expertly plotted, suspenseful, and immersive. Lisa Dillman's translation is crisp and elegant. Just extraordinary."
She Was Found in a Guitar Case (2021)
David James Keaton
"A cult Classic waiting on its cult."
Safecracker (2021)
Ryan Wick
"Ryan Wick's Safecracker is a high stakes thriller that kept me reading through the night until my kids tapped me on the shoulder and told me it was time for breakfast. A knockout cast of characters, a killer sense of place, and a scope that's truly cinematic in the best way. A hell of a fun read."
