William Boyle recommends
The Donut Legion (2023)
Joe R Lansdale
"Joe R. Lansdale's THE DONUT LEGION centers around a writer searching for his missing ex-wife with the help of his private dick brother and a wannabe journalist, diving headlong into the bowels of a flying-saucer cult and their sketchy donut shop front. It's a full-tilt blast, shot through with Lansdale's searching humanism and deft touch. His East Texas brims with weirdness. Vibrant and rowdy and just so much damn fun. I've lost faith in a lot of people and things and institutions over the years, but I've never lost faith in Lansdale's books, and this is one of his best yet."
Come Away From Her (2023)
Samuel W Gailey
"In Come Away From Her, Samuel W. Gailey sustains the tension at such a pitch that it's hard to look away for even a second. Gailey's prose is muscular and melodic; his characters are full of humanity. This book hits like a thunderbolt."
Find Him (2022)
Jake Hinkson
"Lean, evocative, and battle-hardened. Top-notch noir with knockout execution and style."
It Dies with You (2022)
Scott Blackburn
"Scott Blackburn's It Dies with You is a stunner. It hits hard right out of the gate and burns with that same intensity all the way through. Crackling prose, great characters, and a killer sense of place. Blackburn's written a gritty tale full of heart."
This Train (2022)
James Grady
"James Grady is a master storyteller. Allow me to crib a line from the old gospel tune by way of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Woody Guthrie, and Bruce Springsteen: This Train is bound for glory. It's a pure gem."
The Devil Himself (2022)
Peter Farris
"Learn for yourself what French readers have known for a while now: Peter Farris is a master of hard-nosed Southern noir, a true heir to Larry Brown, Harry Crews, and Tom Franklin. The Devil Himself thunders off the page with beautiful writing and a killer sense of place. It's urgent, triumphant, and unflinching."
