Kij Johnson recommends

The Traitor Baru Cormorant (2015)
(Masquerade , book 1)
Seth Dickinson
"An extraordinary debut--powerful, complex, and passionate. I was blown away by it."

Tomorrow Factory (2018)
Rich Larson
"Rich Larson writes sharp, ambitious fiction that I can't forget. Tomorrow Factory is a fantastic chance to see him at his best."

A Song for a New Day (2019)
Sarah Pinsker
"A Song for a New Day is a compulsively readable story about music, freedom, taking chances, and living with your past. I meant to read it slowly, savoring Pinsker's near-future world-building and her perfect descriptions of performance, but I ended up gulping it down, so eager to see what happens next for Luce and Rosemary, each brave and resourceful in her own way."

Unity (2021)
Elly Bangs
"Unity manages to be simultaneously exciting and philosophical, a brilliant gut-punch of a novel. I cannot wait to see what Elly Bangs does next."

Nothing But Blackened Teeth (2021)
Cassandra Khaw
"Khaw is always compulsively readable. This was a wonderful haunted-house story, modern characterizations in compelling tension with a lyrically beautiful ancient Japanese residence."
