Stephen Baxter recommends

Cities in Flight (1970)
(Cities in Flight)
James Blish
"A compelling future history, a tale of thistledown cities blown by the winds of time. This is one of SF's most original concepts, an exciting tale deepened and made utterly plausible by Blish's craft and his mature understanding of people and history. If you haven't read this yet, I envy you. Blish's cities will fly through your dreams."

Revelation Space (2000)
(Revelation Space, book 1)
Alastair Reynolds
"The most stunning and original alien artefact in modern science fiction."

Appleseed (2001)
John Clute
"Exuberant, witty, sexy, satirical ... every word is a special effects firecracker."

Vitals (2002)
Greg Bear
"Astonishing. I was blown away by its ferocious intelligence, astounding research and insight, and terrifying logic. Vitals is the ultimate conspiracy theory. Vitals is the future of the thriller, and a thriller of our future: Vitals is biotech noir. Read it with the light on. Prepare not to sleep easy."

Darkness Falling (2002)
(Forever Twilight, book 1)
Peter Crowther
"A fast-paced, character-driven, funny, gruesome apocalypse."

Coyote (2002)
(Coyote, book 1)
Allen Steele
"An homage to wonder, hope, and determination... Steele has constructed this glorious tale of a new starflung Mayflower from the legacies of Heinlein, Twaine, Hemingway, and others - and he has founded it on the essence of America."

The Mirrored Heavens (2008)
(Autumn Rain, book 1)
David J Williams
"A crackling cyberthriller. This is Tom Clancy interfacing Bruce Sterling. David Williams has hacked into the future."

War in Heaven (2011)
(Veteran, book 2)
Gavin G Smith
"Gavin Smith has changed the rules of engagement."

Daughter of the Sword (2012)
(Fated Blades, book 1)
Steve Bein
"A strikingly original saga blending contemporary thriller and historical fantasy."

Lockstep (2014)
Karl Schroeder
"Schroeder has the rare and invaluable ability tp develop wholly new concepts and turn them into compelling narratives."

Planetfall (2015)
(Planetfall , book 1)
Emma Newman
"Think Interstellar, think Prometheus...an unfolding alien mystery and complex, utterly believable characters. You will want to believe."

Barbary Station (2017)
(Shieldrunner Pirates, book 1)
R E Stearns
"An exhilarating mashup of Golden-Age widescreen and zeitgeist cool. Totally unexpected. More please!"

Stone Clock (2018)
(Spin Trilogy, book 3)
Andrew Bannister
"In Bannister's hands space opera lives on, gaudy and brutal and glorious."

Sunfall (2019)
Jim Al-Khalili
"The Day After Tomorrow meets Neuromancer . . . When the planet's magnetic field fails, the naked sun threatens to deliver an extinction level event now and every century unless a high-tech near future humanity can save itself. Sunfall is sizzling stuff. And the best informed techno-thriller you are ever likely to read."

Children of Ruin (2019)
(Children of Time, book 2)
Adrian Tchaikovsky
"A novel of sublime plot twists and spectacular set pieces, all underpinned by great ideas. And it is crisply modern - but with the sensibility of classic science fiction. Asimov or Clarke might have written this. A hugely satisfying sequel."

Phoenix Extravagant (2020)
Yoon Ha Lee
"Powerful. Unforgettable. This is another amazing piece of work, and I have the feeling I need to read it again to get it fully!"

This Fragile Earth (2021)
Susannah Wise
"A very British disaster epic. Echoes of John Wyndham. Resonances for today."

Under Fortunate Stars (2022)
Ren Hutchings
"If the Guardians of the Galaxy crashed the Foundation... A twisty, enthralling space-time opera. Fortunate readers, and a future star."
